Primary School Teaches Seeds of Hope

EmmanuelI continue to be amazed at Favor of God’s blessings.  The seed to build a Primary school was planted in 2006 and came to fruition in 2008.  It was born out of our desire to educate children from our House of Hope Children’s Home, like Emmanuel Odonko, in a spiritually rich and academically sound environment.  The best way to accomplish this goal was to have a school in close proximity to the House of Hope, have a class size of less than thirty students, hire highly qualified Christian teachers, and finally, serve a hot lunch to Emmanuel and his classmates every day.  Through vigilance and prayer, Favor has accomplished all of this and more.

This vision that began for Emmanuel and the other children of the House of Hope quickly expanded into a campaign for the children of the surrounding Gulu community. The primary school, currently on rented grounds, now educates over 275 students.  It is the only school in Gulu to serve lunch and the students consistently score exceptionally high on the government academic tests.  No wonder there is a long waiting list to get into the school.

Favor’s vision continues with the recent purchase of ten acres. We have plans to build new facilities for our Primary School, our Bible College, as well as new separate housing facilities for the children of the House of Hope. These dreams have and will be made possible through the generosity of supporters who share the vision of bringing hope and healing to Gulu.

What a beautiful story thus far for Emmanuel and his House of Hope brothers and sisters. Their journey has taken them from spiritual bondage, into a safe-haven of spiritual and physical nourishment.  And they are now developing in an environment of academic excellence.  God has lifted them up, bathed them in His spirit, educated them in His name, and they are now planters of a new Kingdom . Their lives will inspire and cultivate hope and healing for themselves and generations to follow them.

FOGM Primary School – Intro

Posted: May 4th, 2009 | Author: Jenelle Herman | Filed under: Favor of God Primary School

What began as a simple discussion soon became passionate as we talked about the desperate needs of Northern Uganda. Then once the Favor of God Primary School arose in the conversation, our hearts resonated even more. There is much to be done in Uganda in the area of education. And Uganda will never truly change without Christ and true education.

Without real education, the people continue making decisions based on false and faulty information, which propels them on in their broken state, and at times, even worsens the situation. A great problem with education here is that students are often passed from grade to grade without learning a thing. It is easier to pass the problems on to the next teacher than figure out how to deal with them.

Another, perhaps more tragic, problem is that very little is taught in the area of critical thinking. Students are spoon-fed information and then given a test where they’re asked to regurgitate that memorized information. They are never asked to process it, use it in any practical sense, or even begin to understand it. Many students complete school here without any real skills or knowledge. They apply for jobs and are hired based on their diplomas, yet they are incapable of doing those jobs once hired. Many of them have never been challenged to think critically.

To combat this desperate need, Favor of God has opened a primary school. Their vision is that the FOG Primary School would stand out as a school that holds to firm standards and a school whose graduates are actually well-equipped and prepared for university, for employment, and for life. The hope is that their graduates would make a difference for the community, the nation, and the Kingdom.

Look for future posts to learn more about the vision, the struggles, and the fruit of FOG Primary School.

Favor of God's Primary Christian School

Posted: December 10th, 2008 | Author: Favor of God | Filed under: Favor of God Primary School

This year Favor of God opened a Christian primary school in Gulu. Right now we have grades 1-5. We are praising God for this new beginning because it holds so much opportunity for reaching out to the community as it serves our House of Hope orphans as well.

The school is located right in the middle of town. This is a prime location letting everyone watch the impact that Christian education can have. The Ugandan government does not place any emphasis on education nor do they allocate government money to improve conditions in the north. And those conditions are not good. We believe that God wants to use this generation of children to bring true revival to northern Uganda. We want far more than peace and economic growth. We want Uganda to become a shining example of God’s saving and miraculous power. God can use Uganda to impact all of Africa and beyond. That’s our prayer and desire.

Our children are the vessels of such a movement. That’s one of the reasons why our Christian school is so important. And it is thriving. After only two terms, our school is receiving some of the highest scores in the region. Praise the Lord! Hopefully soon we can add kindergarten and the 6th grade and then eventually 7th-12th as well.
